Brunswick County Lawn Service

Brunswick County lawn serviceDethatching a lawn is an important part of keeping your lawn healthy. There are a few ways you can do this but there are certain things to consider. You can remove the thatch manually if your lawn is small and simple in design. You have to rake the built up thatch from the base of the grass.  Alternately, you can consider hiring professionals to do the job quickly and effectively. Dethatching lawns is one of many Brunswick County lawn service options that we offer at Carolina Creations.

Our Brunswick County lawn service professionals use special dethatching equipment to remove thatch. Using the right type of tools is important to protect your lawn. It is also important to dethatch at the right time of the year. This would be driven by factors such as the climate and the type of grass you have.

We recommend dethatching be done only when the climate is conducive for good growth. The process is hard on the lawn and for that reason it should not be done in extreme heat or in other conditions that are adverse for growth. Good growing conditions will ensure that grass will recover. Late spring and early fall are ideal for carrying dethatching.

Brunswick County lawn service is an important part of keeping your lawn looking green, weed-free and attractive to you and your guests.

Soil Sampling for Maintaining Healthy Turf

soil sampling for maintaining healthy turfA good soil test is key to determining what types of lawn care practices should be used on your property. Soil sampling for maintaining healthy turf is critical in lawn care and involves checking on the conditions of the soil in an area. Soil sampling for maintaining healthy turf include tests that relate to things like the acidity of soil, the firmness of the soil and whether or not it is able to maintain moisture as well as it should.

Some types of soil is are too acidic and having a pH level that is not on par with what should be used. Some lawns might also have soil that has been severely compacted and is not able to get the nutrients that it needs. There are even cases where diseases might be rampant in soils.

soil sampling for maintaining healthy turfA lawn care professional will need to work with getting a soil sample ready for testing. This can be done by digging up a certain amount of soil and getting it reviewed. It is often best to get soil sampling for maintaining healthy turf from many parts of a lawn to ensure that a more definite series of results can be found.

A proper lawn care provider will then provide the samples to a local testing facility. The tests are going to be more accurate when done professionally than if they were done with a testing device that could normally be found in a local garden or lawn care store. The results should list information on the pH level of the soil. This is used to determine if any new materials need to be added in order to keep it healthy.

Nutrient levels can be measured in the sample. This includes information on how much is inside of different soil samples and whether or not the nutrients in an area need to have different kinds of fertilizer added to help make a lawn a little healthier.

The soil testing that works through a lawn care provider is an essential service for anyone to use. Soil testing involves determining how well the soil in any area is built and whether or not it needs to be adjusted as a means of keeping it healthy.

Eliminating Wild Onions/Wild Garlic – Winter Weed

Wild onions/wild garlic - Winter weedHomeowners with turf grasses such as Bermuda grass, Zoysia grass, Bahia grass, Centipede grass, and St. Augustine grass will sometimes battle wild onions/wild garlic – winter weed on their property as well as dandelion, clover, plantains, and other broadleaf weeds. With the correct application of postemergence herbicides we are able to eliminate these winter weeds from your lawn.

Postemergence herbicides target visible weeds. They are used primarily against broadleaf weeds, perennial grasses, and sedges. The chemicals 2,4-D, dicamba, carfentrazone, triclopyr, clorpyralid, MCPP and MCPA are broadleaf herbicides. They have been combined in many products that control broadleaf weeds. Most broadleaf weeds are best treated in the spring or fall when air temperatures are between 65 and 85° F. Turf damage is more likely in hotter temperatures. To reach and maintain acceptable control, repeat applications are required 10 to 14 days apart.

Effective weed control of wild onions/wild garlic – winter weed begins with proper management practices, which encourage a dense and healthy turf. A healthy turf shades the soil so that less sunlight reaches the ready-to-germinate weed seeds. A thick turf minimizes the space available for weeds to become established. Proper management practices include mowing, watering, fertilizing and liming.

Even when cultural practices are heeded, wild onions/wild garlic – winter weed may appear. If the number of weeds reaches an unacceptable level and pulling by hand is out of the question, you may want to turn to herbicides. Three-way broadleaf herbicides containing 2,4-D, dicamba and mecoprop (MCPP) will provide control of wild garlic and wild onion with repeat applications. Examples of these products are Bayer Advanced Southern Weed Killer for Lawns, Spectracide Weed Stop for Lawns – for Southern Lawns, and Ferti-lome Weed-Out Lawn Weed Killer. These products can be purchased in relatively small quantities for use by the homeowner. It is also important to use a non-ionic surfactant (as described on the herbicide product label) to improve transfer of the herbicide into the weeds. Spray wild garlic and wild onion in November and again in late winter or early spring. Improved results will be obtained by spraying immediately after mowing the onion/wild garlic weeds. Alternatively you may wish to damage the smooth surface of the weed stalks by pulling an old weathered 2 X 6 board across the weeds and walking on the stalks to improve adhesion of the mixture to the weed surface. If at this point the project appears to be too elaborate for you as a homeowner to attempt, it is important to call in professionals like us who are in the lawn care and maintenance business.

Submitting Soil Samples and Applying Recommended Products

Lawn Care ServicesThe most important part of making fertilizer recommendations is collecting a good, representative soil sample for testing. Soil test results and fertilizer recommendations are based solely on the few ounces of soil submitted to the laboratory for analysis. Our lawn care services include obtaining soil samples, interpreting analysis results and applying the recommended products for optimum results.

Gardens, lawns, and landscaped areas are all sampled separately. As part of our lawn care services we collect random sample cores from each area of your property. Problem areas and areas with shrubs, trees, or flowerbeds are sampled separately from other turf or lawn areas.

Soil sampling can also be used to “troubleshoot” areas of the lawn that are visually different or are consistently low yielding when compared to the rest of the lawn. A sample is taken from both the poor growing area and adjacent areas of good growth.

One commonly overlooked component of soil sampling is the depth of soil to be tested. Most plant nutrients accumulate at the soil surface. This nutrient stratification is a result of past broadcast fertilizer applications and decomposition of plant residue on the soil surface. Because there is a higher concentration of nutrients on the soil surface, soil test values usually go down as the sample depth is increased. Lawns and turf grass are core sampled to a depth of 3 to 4 inches.

Sampling and preparing the soil for submission is only half of the process. The other equally important part is filling out sample information sheets so that the desired crop, turf grass, and other information can be considered when making the fertilizer recommendations. The sample information sheet contains all the important information required to provide accurate lime and fertilizer recommendations as part of our regular lawn care services.

Pre-Emergent Herbicide for Winter Turf Weeds

lawn care maintenanceAn important part of our lawn care maintenance is attentive weed control. One of the most effective ways we control weeds is by applying pre-emergent herbicide, a chemical that prevents unwanted growth from appearing in your winter turf.

Contrary to popular belief, pre-emergent weed killers don’t destroy weeds and their seeds. They simply stop them from growing. Some seeds are known to last 50 years, so if the herbicide isn’t applied each year, the weed will grow.

Pre-emergent herbicides only work if they are applied during lawn care maintenance before the weed’s growth period. But if applied too early, weather will dilute the herbicide and the weed will grow unencumbered.

According to garden experts from many regions of the U.S., any pre-emergent herbicide for winter turf weeds needs to be applied so that they activate before winter weeds make an appearance in your lawn.

There are two times to apply pre-emergent herbicides — early spring and fall — because there are primarily two types of weeds, winter weeds and summer weeds. This is especially true in regions that don’t completely freeze over in the winter. The fall application, done during your regular lawn care maintenance, is to catch weeds as they set new seed. This fall application will limit any late fall growth and hopefully begin weeding work for next year.
